Invitation to Proportionate Share/Equitable Services

Dear Private School Representatives and Parents of Homeschooled Children,

In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004), public school districts are required to set aside a portion of their federal special education funds (IDEA Part B) to provide equitable services for eligible students with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in private elementary and secondary schools located within the district’s boundaries.

This process, known as Proportionate Share, ensures that students with disabilities attending private schools or who are homeschooled are provided the opportunity to receive special education and related services funded through IDEA.

For more information, please contact BRUSD Special Services to schedule a consultation meeting to discuss how these equitable services will be planned and provided during the school year. Topics will include:

- How the proportionate share amount is calculated

- How and where services will be delivered

- How students will be identified and evaluated

- How consultation and communication will continue throughout the year
