BRUSD 2021 Update 7/28/2020

All:

The following generally outlines our District’s plans to resume instruction for the 2020-21 School Year: The health, safety, and welfare of our students AND staff remain our top priorities. Therefore, on August 10, 2020, all students will begin the 2020-21 Academic Year online-only.

The week of August 3, 2020, every student will receive a laptop (including families with multiple kids enrolled). Families lacking internet service receive a hotspot device, capable of supporting up to 15 students at once.

*Students receiving special education services, English Language Learners, and those placed in foster care settings are permitted on-campus Monday-Friday within designated areas only. Transportation is provided for students requiring special supports.

Individual and small groups of students (less than 10) may participate in counseling sessions if invited. Students receiving onsite services are contacted with instructions on how to proceed the week of August 3. No other students are allowed on campus unless participating in a District approved extracurricular activity. The supports provided for our “at-risks” students exceeds that required by the Arizona Department of Education.

All Blue Ridge students are required to sign a COVID waiver before attending on-campus learning, or if they are participating in exceptional support or extracurricular activity or service provided by the District.

While on campus, all Blue Ridge staff and students must wear a mask, practice hand-washing, and participate in social and physical distancing measures implemented to reduce the spread of the COVID virus. Those demonstrating medical restrictions and young children may be exempt from mask-wearing.

Nonetheless, despite its best efforts, the District cannot guarantee its students, employees, or volunteers will not contract the COVID-19 virus while in attendance.

In accord with the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA), high school extracurricular activities resume August 17, 2020. Blue Ridge coaches, student-athletes, and volunteers must sign waivers before participating. Coaching and student participation are voluntary. Coaches, however, will be compensated for their services.

The District will remain online-only for the first quarter of the 2020-21 School Year, while carefully monitoring local conditions regarding the presence and spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Determinations regarding a return to in-person schooling will include a metric provided by the Arizona Department of Education on August 7, 2020, coupled with data provided by local healthcare professionals, including epidemiologists.

The next phase under consideration is a hybrid schedule where students attend school in-person, twice weekly, while completing online work on the opposite days. This phase will not occur before October 1, 2020. Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully,

Dr. Michael L. Wright
Superintendent
Blue Ridge Unified Schools
