    McKinney-Vento Homeless Education
    Blue Ridge Unified School District
The Blue Ridge Unified School District (BRUSD) is committed to ensuring the educational rights of all homeless children and youth, as defined by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. This Act guarantees a free and appropriate public education to homeless students, regardless of their housing situation.
    Who is Considered Homeless?
A homeless student is defined as one who:

      *   Lives in a shelter
      *   Lives in a temporary housing situation (e.g., motel, campground)
      *   Lives in a public or private place not designed for human habitation (e.g., car, park)
      *   Lives doubled-up with another family due to lack of housing
    Your Rights Under McKinney-Vento

      *   Immediate enrollment in school, even without immunization records or proof of residency.
      *   Remain in your school of origin (the school you attended before becoming homeless), if possible.
      *   Transportation to your school of origin, if attending is feasible.
      *   Receive educational services comparable to those provided to other students.
      *   Participate in extracurricular activities and programs.
    BRUSD’s Commitment
BRUSD is dedicated to providing homeless students with a quality education and the support they need to succeed. We work to:

      *   Identify homeless students quickly and efficiently.
      *   Remove barriers to enrollment and placement.
      *   Provide academic and social support services.
      *   Collaborate with community partners to connect families with resources.
