Blue Ridge Unified School District
The Blue Ridge Unified School District (BRUSD) is committed to ensuring the educational rights of all homeless children and youth, as defined by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. This Act guarantees a free and appropriate public education to homeless students, regardless of their housing situation.
Who is Considered Homeless?
A homeless student is defined as one who:* Lives in a shelter
* Lives in a temporary housing situation (e.g., motel, campground)
* Lives in a public or private place not designed for human habitation (e.g., car, park)
* Lives doubled-up with another family due to lack of housing
Your Rights Under McKinney-Vento* Immediate enrollment in school, even without immunization records or proof of residency.
* Remain in your school of origin (the school you attended before becoming homeless), if possible.
* Transportation to your school of origin, if attending is feasible.
* Receive educational services comparable to those provided to other students.
* Participate in extracurricular activities and programs.

* Remove barriers to enrollment and placement.
* Provide academic and social support services.
* Collaborate with community partners to connect families with resources.
